A dog is typically considered senior at 7–8 years for larger breeds and 10–11 years for smaller ones. As dogs age, their grooming needs — and their tolerance — change significantly.
Joints become stiffer, making standing for long periods painful. Cognitive changes can make unfamiliar environments more disorienting. Skin becomes thinner and more sensitive. Some older dogs develop lumps, bumps, or skin conditions that require careful handling.
We account for all of this. Senior grooms take longer, are paced more gently, and include more frequent breaks and position changes. We also flag any skin changes or lumps we notice — things that are easier to spot during grooming than at home.
We avoid long periods in any single position. Dogs with arthritis or hip dysplasia are repositioned often and supported throughout.
Senior grooms are unrushed. If your dog needs to sit, lie down, or simply catch their breath mid-groom, we build that in without hurrying them.
Older dogs are more sensitive to temperature. We use warm (not hot) water and keep dryer heat minimal, monitoring comfort throughout.
We check for lumps, skin changes, ear conditions, and dental issues during grooming and report anything unusual to you. Groomers often catch things vets miss.
Senior skin is thinner and more reactive. We use gentler brushes, softer products, and avoid any friction that could cause irritation or discomfort.
Being in their own driveway — with familiar scents, their home nearby, and no strange dogs — dramatically reduces anxiety for cognitively aging dogs.
